Memories in a Mini-Cassette

Patented in 1898, the first magnetic recorder saved messages on steel wire. Today, information is stored in a magnetic coating on plastic tape.

The magnetic particles are held on the tape with a binder coating that eventually degrades, destroying your information. Other common problems with magnetic tapes are stretching, shrinking, breaking or creasing. Treat them carefully.
