Celebrate International Astronomy Day 2012

Curious about the wonders of the heavens? The Universe is yours to discover, so make it a family outing to explore it at the Museum.

Daytime Activities (included with Museum admission)

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Enjoy activities for all ages that are out of this world. Explore the night sky in the inflatable Starlab Planetarium, safely observe the Sun (weather permitting), or visit the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory. Enjoy a children’s story, take part in hands-on activities or watch the gorgeous night sky images in the short film Hawaiian Starlight.

Free Star Party

8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Join us for a free star party! Enjoy views of the Moon, Saturn, and Mars through a variety of telescopes including Canada’s largest refracting telescope. Strictly weather permitting (no indoor presentations). Dress warmly.

Astronomy Film—Hawaiian Starlight

10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Admire gorgeous Hawaiian night sky pictures captured by the Mauna Kea Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. This silent film is accompanied by a beautiful musical score.

Astronomy Adventure—Scavenger Hunt

9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The whole family can enjoy this astronomy scavenger hunt. Pick up an activity sheet at the INFO Desk [INFO desk icon] and fill in your ballot for a chance to win a $35 gift certificate to the Museum’s Scientique boutique.

Observatory Open-House

10:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Visit the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory, housing Canada’s largest refracting telescope, and discover the history of this amazing astronomical instrument.

Solar Observing

10:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Safely observe the beauty of the Sun, and the activity on its surface, through a solar telescope (weather permitting).

Planetarium Presentations: Star-struck

10:15 a.m., 11 a.m. 1:15 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 2:45 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.

Explore the wonders of the night sky in the Museum’s inflatable Starlab Planetarium. Register at the Planetarium entrance; maximum 20 people per presentation.

Ask the Astronomer Kiosk

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Learn more about astronomy from members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Examine meteorites and astronomical photographs, and learn some techniques for taking your own photos of the night sky.

Free Star Party

Crazy Comet Workshop

11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Watch a live demonstration with dry-ice comets, learn how these mysterious Solar System objects are formed, and create your own comet to take home.
