Railway Weekend - All aboard!

Get an up-close look at locomotives—enormous, powerful machines that drove Canada's history. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to climb aboard the 6400 locomotive, ride a passenger rail car pulled by the Shay steam locomotive, or take a special guided tour exploring the Museum's railway treasures. Enjoy railway-themed games and craft activities.

Take a 10‐minute ride in a vintage rail car as volunteers from the Bytown Railway Society operate the Shay steam locomotive. Tickets are available at the Info desk.

This is a rare treat! You are invited on a 1-hour guided tour of the artifact storage facility to explore the Museum's extensive behind-the-scenes collection. This facility is not usually accessible to the public. Space is limited — please register at the Info desk.

Calling All Engines — A Thomas the Tank Engine movie

Thomas and the other steam engines must put aside their quarrel with the diesel engines, or the airport won't be ready and the bridge will never get built. Can all of the engines remain friends?

Storytelling: The Little Engine that Could

When their big locomotive is too tired to keep on going, the toys must find another engine to help them cross the mountain. Enjoy this classic story with your family.

See a "Big Hook" in Action

10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Watch as the Bytown Railway Society demonstrates the 50-tonne capacity of its steam wrecking-crane. This type of crane was used for routine railway maintenance and clean-up after railway accidents. The Society's crane is now nearly a century old, and is one of only two operational coal-fired wrecking-cranes in North America.

Cars on Rails Demonstration

Join the Bytown Railway Society for a demonstration of its unusual 1958 Pontiac Hi-Rail vehicle, able to operate on either roads or rails.

Multi-Purpose Plough

See the Jordan multi-purpose plough in action, as the Bytown Railway Society demonstrates the versatility of this machine. You'll be amazed as its massive wings are deployed!
