Public Science Talk: In Search of Time

Connect with experts at the intersection of science and society, technology and culture at the Canada Science and Technology Museum as science journalist Dan Falk explores some of the most intriguing aspects of time.

In Search of Time is a presentation by Dan Falk, Canadian science journalist, broadcaster, and author. Time is at once intimately familiar and yet deeply mysterious. It is intangible: we say it flows like a river — yet when we try to examine that flow, the river seems reduced to a mirage. It is no wonder that philosophers, poets, and scientists from Aristotle to Einstein, as well as present-day scientists, have grappled for centuries with the enigma of time. In his latest book, In Search of Time: Journeys Along a Curious Dimension (McClelland & Stewart, 2008), Mr. Falk explores some of the most intriguing aspects of time. During his illustrated talk he shows how our ancestors first learned to measure time, how Newton and Leibniz argued over its nature, and how Einstein linked time and space. Mr. Falk's presentation also provides a brief look at the physics of time travel and the paradoxes it presents.

Dan Falk has written about science for The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Walrus, SkyNews, Astronomy, Sky & Telescope, and New Scientist, and has been a regular contributor to the CBC Radio program Ideas. His awards include Gold and Silver Medals for Radio Programming from the New York Festivals, and the Science Writing Award in Physics and Astronomy from the American Institute of Physics. His first book, Universe on a T-Shirt: The Quest for the Theory of Everything, won the 2002 Science in Society Journalism Award from the Canadian Science Writers’ Association. He lives in Toronto, and is a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Toronto Centre.
