Breaking the Bad News: What Do We Do when Science Tells Us What We Don’t Want to Hear?
Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 6:00 p.m.
Fox and Feather Pub

Ottawa, Ontario
Café Scientifique is a forum where, for the price of a coffee or a glass of wine, adults can get together and talk about recent -- and sometimes controversial -- developments in science and technology. The Canada Science and Technology Museum and its partner the Canadian Museum of Nature serve as moderators to the discussion between invited experts and the general public. Lively discussions guaranteed!
Scientific research is constantly providing us with new information, results and discoveries. But should we believe everything science tells us, or are skepticism, experience and intuition a healthy response to what we hear? What about scientific results that might leave us without a scapegoat — someone else to blame? Do we sometimes deny scientific evidence in order to avoid coping with reality? Can subcultures with deeply held beliefs and fixed views ever be persuaded by science? In the face of scientific skepticism, is there a way to make scientific consensus more acceptable to those who may not want to hear the results?
