Objectives of the program

(Grades 4 to 6)

Learning Outcomes:

During the Museum’s school program "Sound Connexions", hands-on experiments demonstrate the properties of sound waves and energy conversion, followed by an explanation of how the hand-set of a telephone works. The application of these principles are shown in the exhibit, CONNEXIONS.

In attending this lesson, your students will:

  • be aware that sound is a form of energy.
  • experience the transformation of sound energy into electrical energy.
  • investigate some properties of sound.
  • compare and assess five different methods of communication and how efficiently they function.

During Your Visit

Students will learn that sound is produced by vibrations. The properties of sound will be explained through several hands-on experiments and demonstrations. An oscilloscope will be used to demonstrate sound waves, and the concept of energy transformation will be introduced. A close examination of the telephone and a discussion of how sound energy is converted into electrical energy will lead into a discussion of other technologies that have been developed to help us communicate over long distances. The program will conclude with a small group activity in the Connexions exhibit in the Museum.
