Learning Outcomes:
After attending this lesson, your students will:
- know that a machine is any device that does "work";
- recognize the advantages gained by using simple machines, including mechanical advantage, in a variety of situations to reduce effort;
- develop an understanding of the relationship between work, force and energy.

During Your Visit
Initially, students will learn that machines transform energy from one form into another to produce useful work. The basic purpose of each kind of simple machine will be discussed. Groups will explore the concepts of work, force and energy, mechanical advantage, the three classes of levers, fixed and moveable pulleys. In the Museum, students will search for simple machines working in combination in the more complex machinery of specific artifacts demonstrating various technologies.
