Prepare a mixture of salt and sand. Put 2 mL of the mixture into a test tube. Add 5 mL water and shake until the salt has dissolved. Place a funnel lined with filter paper on a jar. Pour the contents of the tube into the funnel. Wash the test tube with a little water and add this to the filter paper. Which substance stays on the filter paper? Can you recover it? What has happened to the other substance? How can you recover this?
Bouncers Into a clear container put equal amounts of water and vinegar (100 mL each). Add a few raisins. What happens? Now add 15 mL baking soda. What happens? Be patient. Try the same thing with popcorn, or peanuts. Can you explain what happens? Life in the Fast Lane Dissolve 5 mL "Kool-Aid" powder in 200 mL water. Compare the speed at which it dissolves in hot, cold, stirred and unstirred water.
