Electric Light Collection
Initiated in 1968, the electric light collection of the Canada
Science and Technology Museum includes arc lamps, incandescent lamps, mercury and
sodium vapour lamps, fluorescent lamps, and the related parts for
maintenance. For the most part a gift of Ontario Hydro, this collection is
particularly significant in terms of the major technical applications and
innovations that have affected Canada's public lighting system since 1880.
This collection brings together lamp holders and light standards that reflect the aesthetic trends of this period, among them the "City Beautiful" movement, Art Deco and modernism.
