Paraphernalia

You can’t imagine all the bicycle “stuff” we’ve collected.

Montreal Bicycle Club medals and mementos, 1878–1900

The Museum also preserves other forms of promotional material distributed by cycle and accessory manufacturers, including posters, pins and colourful lithographed buttons dating from the late 19th century. Elaborately styled badges and medals were issued to commemorate sporting events and club rank. The fine workmanship of these items reflects the seriousness of bicycle club membership. One of the earliest pins in the collection was distributed by the Montreal Bicycle Club in 1878.

The League of American Wheelmen, formed in 1880, distributed buttons in support of its “Good Roads” campaign. The bicycle theme was used in the design of everything from board games, picture frames, greeting cards, and containers to a wide variety of product advertising.
