The Boom Years

The Canadian cycle industry thrived from 1895 to 1900.

By 1898, the Canadian cycle industry was thriving helped by favourable tariff legislation. There were some 25 companies making cycles and many more making parts and accessories. These firms employed hundreds of skilled workers and supported hundreds of others in wholesale and retail sales outlets across the country. Although most catered to the domestic market, a few marketed their products overseas.

Massey-Harris was represented in France and Australia, and Arthur Pequegnat is said to have shipped the “Berlin” (840719) to his native Switzerland.

The number of exports was still extremely small compared with the number of bicycles and quantity of parts imported into Canada.
