Public Science Talk:
Medical miracles: doctors, saints, and healing in the modern world
Monday, May 17, 2010, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Dr Jacalyn Duffin
Hannah Chair, History of Medicine, Queen’s University
Modern culture may separate medicine and miracles, but their histories are closely intertwined. Dr Jacalyn Duffin, who is both a physician and a historian, has examined Vatican sources on 1,400 miracles from six continents and spanning four centuries. She recounts intimate stories of illness, prayer, and treatment — a woman’s tumour disappears, a man’s wound heals itself — exploring how medicine and religion interpret examples of human distress. Dr. Duffin’s talk is based on her book by the same title, published in 2009 and awarded the Jason A. Hannah Medal for a significant publication in the history of medicine.
