The Canada Science and Technology Museum in partnership with Carleton University invites you to Public Science Talk: Designer Babies: Science Fiction or Science Prediction?
Dr. John Stead will explore the science behind the genetic modification of humans and the feasibility of “designer babies”.
Presentation by Dr. John Stead, Institute of Neuroscience, Carleton University
In today’s popular culture, human modification typically takes the form of genetic manipulation, as in the movie Gattaca, the novel Oryx and Crake, and the video game Halo. But is human modification science fiction or science fact? In his talk, Dr. Stead will be exploring the science behind the genetic modification of humans, and the feasibility of “designer babies”, asking questions such as: Is genetic modification of humans possible? How does the technology behind genetic modification work? What characteristics could realistically be changed by genetic modification? Is it ethical to modify human DNA?
