International Astronomy Day: April 24, 2010

Celebrate International Astronomy Day at the Museum. Enjoy fun, hands-on daytime activities for children and adults. Join us at the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory for a free evening star party, and get a close-up look at the wonders of the night sky (weather permitting). Make it a family outing, and come discover the Universe with us!

Daytime Activities: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Evening Star Party: 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory Tours

12:00–12:30 p.m.

Visit the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory, which features Canada’s largest refracting telescope, and learn about the history of this amazing astronomical instrument.

Solar Observing

10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Safely observe the beauty of the Sun, and the activity on its surface, through a solar telescope (weather permitting).

Planetarium Presentations
Starstruck

1:15, 2:00, 2:45 and 3:30 p.m.

Explore the wonders of the night sky in our inflatable Starlab Planetarium. Sign-up at the Planetarium entrance. Limit: 20 people per presentation.

Ask the Astronomer Booth

10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Learn more about astronomy from members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Examine meteorites, look at astronomical photos, and learn some techniques for taking your own pictures of the night sky.

Cosmic Craft Corner

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
1:00–4:00 p.m.

Create your very own planisphere at our Cosmic Craft Corner.

Astronomy Quest

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Discover facts and anecdotes about the science of the skies when you participate in this special scavenger hunt that the whole family can enjoy!

Free Star Party

8:00–10:00 p.m.

Join us for a free star party. Enjoy views of the Moon, Saturn and Mars through a variety of telescopes, including Canada’s largest refracting telescope. Weather permitting (no indoor presentations). Dress warmly.
