Café Scientifique is a forum where, for the price of a coffee or a glass of wine, adults can get together and talk about recent -- and sometimes controversial --developments in science and technology. The Canada Science and Technology Museum and its partner the Canadian Museum of Nature serve as moderators to the discussion between invited experts and the general public. Lively discussions guaranteed!
Social networks and global connectivity through the Internet are allowing people to communicate quickly, easily and conveniently. But are we conducting too many of our relationships via technology — replacing the tactile with the digital, and choosing convenience over true connection? Do communications technologies facilitate our face-to-face interactions with the people around us, or do they isolate us behind a computer screen? Are technological and face-to-face interactions complementary, or mutually exclusive? In an age of rapid technological advance, will virtual communication one day become so good that we will no longer feel the need to shake hands with a business partner, or meet a friend for coffee?
