In Search of the Canadian Car Opening Soon at the Canada Science and Technology Museum

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canada Science and Technology Museum (CSTM) is thrilled to announce its upcoming exhibition: In Search of the Canadian Car. This new exhibition, opening on June 22, 2010, will showcase part of the Museum’s world-renowned automobile collection, which serves as a record of the rich cultural connections between science, technology and society.

In Search of the Canadian Car focuses on the question of national identity as it pertains to manufacturing, design, marketing, and consumer choices in Canada,” says Claude Faubert, Director General of the CSTM. “It provides important insight into the Canadian experience of building and consuming this profoundly transformative technology from economic, environmental, social, and cultural perspectives.”

With its participation in events such as the Auto Show, the CSTM is able to share two of the many vehicles from its world-renowned automobile collection with Canadians across the country.

The exhibition presents 13 unique automobiles from the Canada Science and Technology Museum collection, as well as memorabilia and advertising. Visitors will experience interactive and engaging exhibition elements, including an opportunity to cast their vote for the “most Canadian” car, firsthand accounts from car designers, and playful assembly-line work in a factory-themed play zone.

In Search of the Canadian Car engages visitors in an informal and informative exploration of the question, “What makes a car Canadian?”

Rather than providing definitive answers to that question, the exhibition presents a variety of perspectives, inviting visitors to draw their own conclusions. Elements related to the environment, green technologies, and car culture are also featured in various sections of the exhibition.

Sharing Canada’s rich collections of objects related to transportation, natural resources, communications, space, energy, manufacturing and industry, the Canada Science and Technology Museum helps Canadians explore the rich connections between science, technology, and culture.
