Café Scientifique

Animal ethics in today’s food industry

September 29, 2009 at 6:00 p.m.
Fox and Feather Pub
283 Elgin Street
Ottawa, Ontario

Café Scientifique is a forum where, for the price of a coffee or a glass of wine, adults can get together and talk about recent -- and sometimes controversial --developments in science and technology. The Canada Science and Technology Museum and its partner the Canadian Museum of Nature serve as moderators to the discussion between invited experts and the general public. Lively discussions guaranteed!

We live in a society of choices: choices of chicken cuts, lamb racks, antibiotic-free sirloin steak and eggs from free-range hens.

Do we really know how food animals are raised? If most of us did, would we make the same choices? Can we trust the claims of governments, environmentalists, and businesses to provide healthy, nutritious, and ethically raised animals? In a world constantly hungry for more, what role do ethics play in raising animals for food?

Guest experts will be on hand to get the discussion rolling.

Invited guests

  • David Castle, Canada Research Chair in Science and Society and Associate Professor, cross-appointed with the Department of Philosophy and the Civil Law Section, University of Ottawa;
  • Kim Systma, cattle farmer and Board member of the Ontario Cattlemen’s Association; and
  • Jason Halvorson, animal rights activist, Ottawa Animal Defense League.
