Electronic Sackbut

1948
Artifact no. 750336

The Electronic Sackbut was designed by Hugh Le Caine at his home studio in Ottawa, Ontario, between 1945 and 1948. This was the first instrument to use voltage control of a vacuum tube oscillator to generate and modify sound — a method that later became the standard approach in electronic music.
